IMAP Email Is Live Now For Customers of EarthLink!
EarthLink is excited to announce that all EarthLink clients can now access the IMAP Email Service.
What does IMAP mean?
Internet Message Access Protocol, IMAP for brief, is another way to review your email which enables you to sync multiple devices with the same emails and folders simultaneously. In addition, IMAP implies you can replicate folders on your intelligent phone or tablet using WebMail or on your PC’s email program.
How does the POP3 and IMAP differ?
POP3 is the sort of email service provided by EarthLink since it was founded. POP3, Post Office Protocol, treats your server email as a single directory. If your email is checked with an email client like Outlook, all your emails are removed from the server and placed on your local computer unless you are specifically telling them to leave a copy on the server. If you generate folders in the Web Mail or Email Client, they will not be replicated and transmitted to other Email clients on the server.
Here’s an instance of what POP3 (left) versus IMAP (right) would look like on an iPhone.
IMAP stores your server folder data as long as you use IMAP in your email client. Web Mail works on an IMAP form. Using IMAP means you can create a personalized Outlook folder and you can view that same personalized Web Mail folder or iPhone folder as long as your iPhone is configured to use IMAP.
IMAP offers enhanced safety choices using StartTLS safety to safeguard your email from EarthLink Mail server download. Optional use of StartTLS.
Who should IMAP use?
You may profit from IMAP if you check your email on various machines. You can remove the danger of accidentally downloading your whole email to a single machine by using IMAP settings.
Using SpamBlocker from EarthLink, you will discover that using IMAP enables you to view your suspect and known spam folders in your email or on your mobile device. You don’t have to go to Web Mail to check your spam flagged messages. You can transfer them straight to your inbox from your spam folders.
Note: If you move spam from known or suspect Spam folders in a email client or mobile device using IMAP, you won’t be offered the options of adding or marking the sender as no spam to your address book. You must use Web Mail to access these features directly.
How much is the risk of IMAP?
The only risk of using IMAP is to keep an eye on your email storage so that you don’t exceed the storage limit because you leave all mail on the server. By logging into Web Mail, you can quickly verify how much mail you have on the server. We give more email room if you want to boost your email storage room.
When can I begin to use IMAP?
An important search, folders and indexing note.
Indexing is the process used to create your various folders and e-mails searchable on the server using your mail program even if these messages have not been previously downloaded. This file is developed for the first time when you check your email with IMAP. As the index file takes some time (how long the number of messages and folders you have on the server depends on), you can see that your folders are not immediately visible, or that searches are searching only for local content. Please allow up to five minutes (it might be much faster than that) to pass and re-check your mail. When the index file is created, it is updated constantly, so you won’t experience this delay again.

Can I alter my POP settings and IMAP configurations on my email client or do I have to build a fresh email configuration on my software?
If you presently use POP, most programs require IMAP to be treated as a fresh email. We suggest that you add IMAP as a fresh setup to your email program instead of attempting to edit the current POP configuration. POP operates differently than IMAP and it could result in lost or missing email in attempting to edit settings.
To make the most of IMAP, you need to make sure you don’t check your email using POP configurations using the same or another device. By default, since POP removes emails from the server, it is counterproductive to run POP and IMAP simultaneously.
Before removing your POP settings make sure you back up any email you have on your desktop that you have downloaded via POP. Make sure your POP settings are set to Leave a Copy on the server if you want to operate both POP and IMAP at the same moment.
What type of safety does IMAP give?
IMAP gives you the capacity to download STARTTLS as a safety option. STARTTLS is a type of SSL encryption between your laptop and the EarthLink mail server that can stop anyone from intercepting and reading your email material from the EarthLink Mail server. You can activate STARTTLS through sophisticated email settings in your email clients and select them as the safety for the incoming server when using IMAP.
It should be noted that IMAP encryption only protects the information you download from the EarthLink server. You must allow TLS or StartTls based on your email client to secure your outbound email. In addition, various email programs use various STARTTLS names. It can be labeled as TLS, STARTTLS or just SSL depending on the device.
What are the known issues with the use of IMAP?
Because of the uniqueness of the multiple Email Clients and software, certain distinctive behavior may be triggered by the client rather than by IMAP. Here are a few examples of recognized problems and client behavior in which you could use IMAP.
Some e-mail programs will attempt to imagine the configurations before you can enter them manually. You may obtain an original mistake when the program tries to verify your email settings if the program does not use the correct settings. You will have to configure these programs manually after the original software effort fails. This is frequently seen in iPhones and iPads on Thunderbird and iOS devices.
Some email clients can show their own custom directories which are not replicated in Web Mail. Example: Thunderbird has a folder for Quarantine not shown in Web Mail.
When using the IMAP, emails can be viewed without moving from the Virus Blocker to the Inbox. This is performed to avoid an infected virus from accidentally sending an email to the box where it can be opened.
Unable to move emails from the inbox to the spam folders. You can see the suspect and known spam folders, but you can’t transfer the fresh emails to the folders. However, if you like, you can transfer emails from the suspect and known spam folders into your inbox.
You cannot use a time as part of a fresh directory name. If you do, two distinct folders will be created on the server rather than one. Most email programs block this.
Some email programs treat folders deleted differently. Only deleted emails can be stored on the local machine by iOS devices. You can modify this in sophisticated systems if it is a problem.

How do I set up IMAP for Thunderbird?
Thunderbird is simple to set IMAP, as it will attempt to use IMAP in the first test, but if you want to switch on encryption while downloading email, you need to modify some settings manually.
When you have just installed Thunderbird, press the Create a New Account email option.
If you have used Thunderbird before, press Account Settings and Options, look at the bottom left of the page. Choose the choice Add Mail Account.
Enter your name, email and password data on the Mail Account Setup page. Check the Recall Password box if you want your password to be remembered by Thunderbird. Click Continue then.
Thunderbird will then configure to use the EarthLink IMAP settings automatically.
To proceed, click DONE.
NOTE: Thunderbird won’t switch on your incoming IMAP mail server’s STARTTLS safety by default. This implies that if you proceed, you’ll see a large red warning screen. That is normal. Click the risk button and click DONE, then OK.
Thunderbird is now testing your configurations. If nothing is wrong, it will bring you back to the primary window of Thunderbird. To access your email, click the box on the left of your email address.
Enabling mail download encryption (optional).
Enabling email download encryption is optional, but if you wish to allow your incoming email, please go back to your account settings and left-click server settings under your email account name.
Then go to the safety configuration, press the Connection Security drop, and select STARTTLS. Leave the remainder of the configurations and press OK at the bottom of the screen.
It may take a moment for older Thunderbird variants to verify configuration adjustments. When Thunderbird appears to be hanging during this moment, simply near it and restart. The latest variants will simply return you to the perspective of your Inbox.
